BPM Detector

Find the estimated tempo of a supported audio or video file directly in your browser, or measure beats per minute manually with Tap Tempo. Use automatic analysis for tracks with a steady pulse and manual tapping when you want to verify half-time, double-time, live, or rhythmically ambiguous material.

How to Detect BPM Online

1

Choose a detection mode

Choose automatic file analysis when you have a supported audio or video file, or switch to Tap Tempo when you want to measure the beat by hand. Automatic analysis is convenient for tracks with clear rhythmic onsets, while tapping is useful for live material, unusual rhythms, or checking whether an automatic result feels half-time or double-time.

2

Analyze or tap

For a file, start analysis and let the browser decode the audio and estimate tempo from rhythmic patterns. For manual measurement, tap the button or press Space in time with the pulse for several beats. Keep your taps steady; a longer sequence generally gives the average more information than only two or three taps.

3

Read your BPM

Read the estimated beats-per-minute value and, for automatic analysis, review the confidence indicator. Treat the number as a tempo estimate rather than an infallible label. Verify important results by listening, tapping along, or checking the track in your DAW or DJ workflow before beat-matching, warping, or syncing other material.

Ways to Find a Track’s Tempo

Auto BPM detection from files

Upload a supported MP3, WAV, M4A, or video file and analyze rhythmic onset patterns locally to estimate the track’s tempo without manually counting every beat.

Tap tempo mode

Tap the beat or press Space in time with the music. The tool averages recent intervals and updates the beats-per-minute reading as you continue tapping steadily.

Works with video

Drop a compatible MP4 or MOV and the browser works with its audio track locally, making it possible to estimate tempo when the source you have is a video rather than a standalone song file.

Confidence score

Use the confidence indicator as one signal when reviewing an automatic estimate. Low-confidence material deserves an extra listening check or a manual Tap Tempo measurement before you rely on the number.

Understanding BPM and Tempo Detection

BPM means beats per minute: a track at 120 BPM has an underlying pulse of roughly 120 beats in one minute. Tempo detection tries to infer that pulse from the audio, but musical rhythm is not always mathematically obvious. Syncopation, quiet drums, tempo changes, live performance, and half-time or double-time interpretation can all affect the number an analyzer reports.

Automatic analysis looks for rhythmic patterns

File analysis examines changes in the audio that may correspond to musical onsets and recurring beat intervals. Clear kick drums, percussion, and steady electronic rhythms are often easier to estimate than ambient passages or recordings with flexible timing. The result is an estimate of the most plausible pulse, not a replacement for listening when exact tempo matters.

Tap Tempo measures the pulse you hear

Manual tapping works by measuring the time between your taps and converting the average interval into beats per minute. Tap on a consistent musical pulse rather than reacting to every note. Several steady taps are more useful than a couple of hurried clicks, and resetting the measurement can help when you lose the beat or switch to a different rhythmic layer.

Watch for half-time and double-time results

A rhythm can often be perceived at more than one related tempo. A track that feels like 70 BPM may contain subdivisions that lead an analyzer toward 140 BPM, and the reverse can happen as well. Neither number necessarily means the audio was analyzed incorrectly; choose the interpretation that matches how you intend to count, mix, arrange, or synchronize the music.

Confidence is useful, but it is not certainty

The confidence indicator helps distinguish a strong rhythmic estimate from a more ambiguous one. A high value can increase trust in the automatic result, while a lower value is a reason to verify manually. Even a confident estimate should be checked when you are preparing a DJ transition, setting a DAW grid, or synchronizing material where a wrong tempo would create audible drift.

Tempo can change inside a recording

Not every song stays at one fixed speed. Live performances can drift naturally, classical or expressive music may use deliberate tempo changes, and some productions contain programmed transitions. A single BPM value summarizes the analyzed material; it cannot describe every local tempo change. For variable-tempo work, use a DAW or other tool that supports tempo maps and detailed beat alignment.

When a BPM Estimate Is Useful

DJ preparation and beat matching

Estimate the tempo of a track before organizing a set or comparing songs with similar speeds. Automatic analysis can provide a quick starting point, while Tap Tempo helps verify tracks with unusual grooves. For a performance, confirm the value in your DJ software and listen for drift rather than relying on a browser estimate alone.

Set a starting tempo in a DAW

Use the estimated value as a starting point when importing a reference track, building a remix, or recreating a groove. If the source does not align with the DAW grid over time, check for half-time or double-time interpretation, tempo drift, or a recording that was never performed to a fixed click.

Practice, workouts, and playlists

Tempo can help musicians choose practice material, dancers compare rhythmic pace, or listeners organize tracks into rough speed ranges. BPM describes pulse rather than intensity: two songs with the same number can feel very different because of arrangement, rhythm, genre, dynamics, and whether the beat is perceived in half-time or double-time.

Analyze tempo from a video file

When the only copy you have is a compatible video, local audio extraction lets you estimate the rhythm without first creating a separate audio file. This can be useful for rehearsal clips, performance recordings, dance references, or music videos, provided the audio contains a sufficiently clear and steady pulse for analysis.
